R*n 714: Witherslack

NOT WHAT HAPPENED, BUT "WHAT HAPPENED?"

14 runners (a misnomer for myself, who brought a pair of Nordic Poles but found they can't run) turned up at Witherslack to commence this run in bright sunshine, which was a relief after the previous week's copious 'summer' rain. The route commenced upwards through a forest, the rambos hareing off into the distance leaving yours truly trailing bringing up the rear, so I've actually no idea what went on, obviously the reason why I was nominated scribe for this edition and would love to know what happened!

I believe Major Twit and Twisted set the pace in the lead, the ground in several places being quite muddy and therefore slippy, as Upper Skirt found to her cost when she fell back on a steep section and walking beside me, fell into a water and mud filled rut. Fortunately no serious physical damage was sustained but she did emerge dripping with a somewhat muddy, dishevelled appearance. We made it to the Beer Stop, just past Witherslack Hall Equestrian Centre, in time to grab a wafer biscuit (it being duly noted and expressed verbally that there was little nutritional value and no proper biscuits!) and a quick drink before being told it was time to leave - little time to catch a breather for this oldie!

On the pleasant less muddy route back, we all stopped at the Hiker's Rest Self Service Cafe, situated in one end of an old apparently unused barn, a quaint concept in these untrusting days, where free coffee, tea and making facilities, plus toilet (duly tested by some brethren), were offered for free or contributions were voluntary. A group photo taken in front by Twisted proved the existence of this unlikely and unusual find - see photos on this site.

All safely making it back to the start, Large Package introduced his virgin daughter, Sarah, who for some strange reason had decided she wished to join our distinguished group of Athletes and she was duly baptised by Baldbrick in the usual manner, so we got a Special Delivery - a very warm welcome to you and we hope you end up at the right address for future events!

A very pleasant not too demanding run/walk in an area not familiar to me with lovely scenery and views, quaint, well kept country cottages and silence once away from the A590 - thank you hares.
