R*n 200: Crummock Water

On an overcast morning, we set off through the woods and after about 100 metres lost the trail. Bubbles then set off in completely the wrong direction, having shortcutted around the false trail marker. (Why did he not get a down down?)

Once back on trail and out of the wood, we eventually started heading up the fell side.

Dormouse and Speedbump, being FRBs, reached the fish hook and ran back around the back markers but the rest of the runners thought it was a left turn! Finding trail, which actually went off to the right, took so long that tactics worked and everyone was grouped together again and provided an opportunity for a group photograph.

A little further on, the wimps’ trail was completely overlooked - so everyone became rambos for the day – setting off over a wired up stile proclaiming “no public access”, which Lurch had misread.

The trail then took us around Crummock Water. We left the shore, looking for flour and found a fish hook which somehow had converted itself into an arrow. As it was on the top of a steep incline, no one seemed unduly concerned about this vandalism.

By now we were beginning to wonder why no mention had been made of a beer stop.

Getting desperate for refreshment we began to hallucinate Lurch’s car but the real thing turned out to be at the end of the run. Conscious of time and the need to be ready for the brewery tour, we returned to the Youth Hostel and the circle was held before dinner that evening.

It is hardly surprising therefore, after the passage of time and several glasses of Jennings, I have no clear memory of who got down downs, but it seemed to be everyone except me!
